PARTIAL HOSPITALIZATION PROGRAMS

An intensive outpatient program (IOP) is one of several treatment programs available at Purpose Healing Center. Your addiction treatment team may refer you to an IOP if you’ve completed medical detox and can stay on track with recovery without the intensive 24-hour supervision of a residential inpatient program.

Here’s more about what happens in an IOP, and how to find out if you’re an ideal candidate for this treatment program.

What Is s Partial Hospitalization Program?

A PHP, also known as day treatment, offers a higher level of care than standard outpatient programs and is less intensive than residential inpatient programs. PHPs give patients the opportunity to live at home while receiving therapy at the rehab center on at least 5 days per week for between 4 to 6 hours per day.

You may be referred to a PHP if you’re recovering from a severe substance use disorder but can still safely manage your addiction while living at home, says the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Which Services Are Available Through PHPs?

PHPs offer many of the same services and therapies as intensive outpatient programs (IOPs), but provide a higher level of supervision for patients who have unstable medical and psychiatric conditions. Many patients who join PHPs suffer from co-occurring mental health disorders and receive dual diagnosis therapy.

Other therapies available through PHPs may include individual and group counseling, medication-assisted treatment, substance abuse education, psychotherapy, motivational enhancement, and family therapy, among many others. Some drug rehab centers offer recreational therapies such as yoga, equine therapy, and music therapy. PHPs can be personalized and tailored to each individual patient to facilitate a successful recovery from addiction and co-occurring disorders.

Who Can Benefit From a PHP?

A PHP can benefit anyone who needs a high level of support as they recover from addiction and transition to a more independent lifestyle. Ideal candidates for PHPs are those who have already completed drug or alcohol detox and a residential inpatient rehab program. PHPs are also ideal for those who can stay on track with recovery while living at home.

Here are a few general criteria that indicate a PHP may be the right choice for you or your loved one:

  • You have a safe, supportive home environment without access to drugs and alcohol.
  • You’ve completed drug detox and are not at risk for life-threatening withdrawal symptoms.
  • You want to go to work or school while receiving addiction treatment.
  • You are willing and motivated to receive several hours of therapy on at least five days per week.
